What Can Go Wrong With Your Adjustment of Status

If you have entered the US legally, you may be permitted to apply for Adjustment of Status which enables you to receive a green card (permanent residence). Adjustment of Status allows you to change your immigration status without having to leave the U.S. If you are eligible for it, you would not have to go through the immigration application through a consulate in a foreign country.

You would have to fit into a specific immigration category, such as petition filed by a spouse, by a family member, asylum, batter spouse or through your employer. There are various other immigration categories which may enable you to become a green card holder.
